Abstract
The relationships between charge-localization processes in chemistry and physics are explored. Origin of the basic ideas is traced from the conception of quantum mechanics to the present day. Independent work in physics (Anderson localization, Mott metal-insulator transitions, BCS superconductivity) and chemistry (electron-transfer theory, mixed-valence spectroscopy) are discussed and parallels between them drawn. In particular, focus is placed on adiabatic electron-transfer theory, its broad-ranging physical significance, and its close connection with superconductivity and Mott localization. The revolutionary idea that chemical reaction rates could be predicted from knowledge of electronic absorption spectra is emphasised, as is the role of nuclear motion in controlling conductivity. Modern technological applications of adiabatic electron-transfer theory in understanding natural photosynthetic processes and the operation of organic artificial solar cells is discussed, as is the development of Molecular Electronics devices in which single molecules are used to transport, control, and store electrical current.

Noel Hush是美国科学院院士FNAS、美国艺术与科学院院士AAAS、英国皇家学院院士FRS、澳大利亚科学院院士FAA,出生于1924年,现年91岁。悉尼大学学士和硕士,曼彻斯特大学博士。曾担任曼彻斯特大学讲师和布里斯托大学教授,1971年回到澳大利亚担任悉尼大学理论化学创系教授和主任,曾经担任澳大利亚国立大学、布鲁海文国家实验室、佛罗里达州立大学、美国凯斯西储大学和英国剑桥大学客座教授。化学物理Chemical Physics等学术期刊、澳大利亚基金委、科学院、澳大利亚化学会等权威学术机构的指导委员会成员。曾获得澳大利亚勋章Order of Australia (Officer) 1993,Australian Federation Medal 2002,Welch Prize in Chemistry 2007(化学领域最高奖、奖金30万美元),Zewail Prize for Molecular Science 2013等众多荣誉。发表300篇物理化学领域的科研论文,包括Nature、PNAS、JACS、Nano Letters等,H因子为57,引用超过100次的论文有25篇。
