        Ladies and Gentlemen,

(It is both an honour and a challenge for the present speaker to be here, although, nothing could give him greater pleasure and satisfaction than your presence. To be candid, without first acquiring a thorough knowledge of the topic today, the speaker dares not snatch at a false repute by a freshly prepared eloquence. As we know, the first thing a speaker could hope for his speech, no doubt, is to win the goodwill of his audience, without it he cannot succeed as he would wish, so is the case with the present speaker in front of you, he wishes to encounter some friendly or kindly glances from you. And he will for once stoop to beg your pardon, if you might, here or there, find some of faults in what follows, or his voice not so distinct and articulate. I have wandered a little, now return to the point. ….)
William Shakespeare (1564-1616), to whom is the name unfamiliar? To whom is any one of his plays or sonnets familiar? Or,in plainer words,we know Shakespeare by the name, yet we don’t know Shakespeare by his work. The seemingly contradictory fact itself—the familiarity of his name and the unfamiliarity of his work---is perhaps one of the main reasons that we, full of admiration, are gathering here to mark the fourth centennial of Shakespeare, the greatest of all English writers, the immortal poet who only belongs to England, but also to every part of the civilized world. Thus, the importance of Shakespeare could be no better shown than the fact that his work has long outlived its author, and he has longer outlived his age. Shakespeare is, it is believed, immensely alive in the 21st century.
