School of Environmental and Chemical Engineering
This school consists of an Environmental Science and
Engineering Department, a Chemical Engineering and Technology
Department, a Radiation Applied Institute and a Color
Materials Institute. Undergraduate and graduate programs
are available. Undergraduate degrees in environmental
engineering and chemical technology are offered, as
well as master¡¯s degrees in environmental engineering
and applied chemistry. There are approximately 700 undergraduate
students and 80 graduate students in the school.
The faculty consists of seven professors,30 associate
professors and four lecturers. The staff includes six
engineers and five lab technicians.
Research projects include a national ¡°863¡± project,
a National Natural Science Foundation project, a national
ministry project, local government projects and company
or factory development projects. Funds for scientific
research total approximately 7 million RMB per year.
The subject of environmental engineering is a key subject
of study for the Shanghai Education Committee and Shanghai
University. The school also maintains friendly relationships
with universities in the United States, Great Britain,
France, Japan and Korea.
The school emphasizes the introduction of basic theory,
research capability, practice and application to society
and markets.

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS AND AWARDS:
In recent years, the department has undertaken seven
projects from the National Natural Science Foundation
of China, more than 10 projects supported by the government
of the province or ministry, and several projects from
private businesses.
Projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation
of China:
1. Theoretical research for liquid-liquid-solid three
phases interfacial tensions.
2. Molecular topological theory research for interfacial
tensions.
3. Preparation of thermo-sensitive hydrogel by radiation
grafting.
4. Preparation of multifunctional intelligent hydrogel
by radiation grafting
5. Basic research on intelligent polymers used as biorecognition
hybrid biomaterials
6. Study of heavy metal ion transport across cell membrane
by using human red cell BLM
7. Study of the crystallized mechanism for bio-macromolecular.
RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS:
Several projects have yielded results used for commercial
processes, including:
1. A special wound dressing permitted as a commercial
biomaterial product by the Armamentarium Administrative
Office since 1998.
2. Use of green technology in the preparation of benzaldehyde.
3. A new polymeric thickening agent.

General Overview of Shanghai University¡¯s Environmental
Science and Engineering Department
As the city¡¯s largest institution for higher learning,
Shanghai University has been an important center for
scientific research and training. The university already
has one new and high-tech development area at the state
level and 20 institute centers approved by the Shanghai
Science Committee or Higher Education Bureau.
The current department head is Professor Qian Weichang,
a renowned scientist, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference (C.P.P.C.C.), and
an academician of the Chinese Academy of Science.
The department employs three full professors, 16 associate
professors and 20 lecturers and engineers who represent
a wide scope of experience and knowledge.
Two master¡¯s programs in environmental engineering and
applied chemistry are available, along with undergraduate
programs in environmental engineering and environmental
science. The environmental engineering subject became
one of 10 key subjects as part of Shanghai University¡¯s
¡°211 project.¡±
The Environmental Science and Engineering Department
already has a strong reputation for research and development
of environmental technology, as well as research, design,
programming, monitoring and assessment of environmental
engineering projects. The department is able to complete
the research and design of important environmental engineering
initiatives, and has undertaken and completed more than
70 projects, with total fees exceeding more than 1 million
RMB.
The department¡¯s scientific researchers have earned
numerous awards, including a third-class Technology
Progress award from the state Environmental Protection
Bureau, a Shanghai Great Technology Results award, a
second-class Shanghai Technology Progress award, and
seven third-class Shanghai Technology Progress awards.
Some research has yielded commercially viable results
in keeping with the department¡¯s emphasis on finding
practical applications for research projects.

RESEARCH ACHIEVEMENTS
Commercialized or in the process of commercialization:
1. Scale factory containing four production lines for
soft contact lenses has been formed.
2. Research of formulation technology for radiation
crosslinking material, such as PE, PVC wire and cable,
heat-shrinkable material, film, tape and foamed plastic
has been put in production at Shanghai Chemical Industry
Works.
3. A factory has been founded near the university as
Xing He Radiation Factory for radiation disinfectant
products.
RECEARCH AWARDS
1. Project of ¡°Extraction technology of U(VI) and Th(IV)
ions from high-temperature nuclear reactor¡± obtained
the Second Progress Award of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences.
2. ¡°Soft contact lens by preirradiation polymerization
and crosslinking¡± obtained the Second Progress Award
of science and technology inventions of China.
3. ¡°Effect of ion implantation on electrical conductivity
of polyaniline¡± obtained the Second Progress Award for
science and technology development of Shanghai.
4. ¡°Radiation transformation and organism transformation
of plant cellulose¡± obtained the Second Progress Award
of the Agricultural Ministry of China.
