College of Life Sciences

The College of Life Sciences of Shanghai University was founded cooperatively by Shanghai University, the Shanghai Institute of Physiology and the Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology. The latter two institutes are prestigious branches of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The dean of the college, Professor Xiong-Li Yang, is a famous neuroscientist and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Although our college does not have a long history, it has already achieved a high level of prestige and adheres to exacting standards. Meanwhile, our research and the education we provide are 21st -century oriented. Our first goal is to make our college one of the top life-science research
groups in China by keeping up with the most current progress in many fields, including cell biology, molecular biology, neurobiology, modern biotechnology, bio-engineering, and biomedical engineering. Our second goal is to provide Shanghai and other communities in China with top-level professionals proficient in both life-science research and bio-engineering.
We offer two majors ¨C bio-engineering and food sciences and engineering ¨C for undergraduates, and currently provide master's programs in biochemical engineering and food science. In addition, the college has founded a key laboratory for cell and molecular biology and a center for biomedical research and development. The Life Sciences and Technologies major offered by the college is one of the "under construction key majors" in the national "211" project.
Our college is a promising one that boasts excellent faculty members; fully one-third of the young professors have earned their doctorates. The college is also well-respected for its research ethics and excellent academic atmosphere. With help from the many institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, we are working hard to broaden our students' knowledge of life sciences. We stress both theoretical research and applications, and teach our students to use modern theories, new technology and their own creativity to conduct research and develop practical applications for their findings.

Committee of the Communist Youth League of China of the College of Life
Sciences
The Communist Youth League of China of the College of Life Sciences is an organization for advanced young people in our college. As an assistant, reserve branch of the Communist Party, the CYLC is responsible for educating all students, executing the plans and policies of the Chinese Communist Party and creatively carrying out related work. The CYLC of our college has a proud history and always serves in a pioneering capacity in all activities in the university and our college.
The committee of the CYLC is the hub of the CYLC's work on the students in our college. The committee has come up with a complete set of working methods in the past several years. A series of student activities were organized by the committee, guided by the thoughts of strengthening the education capability of CYLC and putting more efforts on establishing grass-roots level CYLC organizations. The activities included offering free blood tests to the public and bone marrow donation
by our students. The work of CYLC in our college has progressed steadily these years. And the efforts resulted in significant accomplishments.
Besides establishing the CYLC organization, the committee also stresses on the study of communism theories and applications. We organize the communism study groups in every CYLC branch to do their work, investigate what the students think, organize the CYLC members to study the theory of communism and the current political events, help and organize students to participate in the practical activities, to go to the society and have better understanding of the society. By experiencing a lot of
practical trainings organized by us, all-around capabilities of the students improved. We always learn from the experiences from the previous work, and use the experiences in combination with current student situation to find a more effective way in our work.
