The College of International Business and Management
Shanghai University founded in May 1999, which is a
merger of former International Business College, Business
Management College and two departments of Literature
College. The merged college has moved into Jiading Campus
since August of that year.
The college involves seven departments and two institutes,
which offers an integrated curriculum. The seven departments
are: Economics, Finance, Business Administration, Management
Science & Engineering, Accounting, Information Management,
and Public Management. The two institutes are: Forecasting
& Consulting Institute of Shanghai University, and
Contemporary Business Institute.
The college sets up 10 specialties offering bachelor
degree that belong to 4 first level subjects respectively,
which are Economics, Business Administration, Management
Science & Engineering, and Public Management. The
specialties are: Economics, Finance, International Economics
& Trade, Cameralistics, Business Administration,
Accounting, Engineering Management, Information Management
& Information System, Tourism Management, and Administrative
Management. The Economics and Cameralistics specialties
did not recruit students for the time being because
of the demand from personnel market. There are 6 master
degrees offered in the college: Finance, International
Trade, Industrial Economics, Accounting, Management
Science & Engineering, and Informatics. The college
establishes an information center, its function is connecting
with Shanghai University Web, maintaining work-nets
in the college, facilitating information construction
for curriculum in each department, managing electronic
commercial lab, as well as graduates' computer room
and literature reading room.
There is 230 staff members in the college, among them
180 are teachers who are about 25 professors, 70 associate
professors and 85 lectures.
College of International Business and Management is
the largest in Shanghai University because of its largest
students' scale with undergraduates 4056, graduates
230, overseas 45 (including bachelor, master, and refresher
students) and adult students 1930. Enrollment in plan
for 2002 is 1000 students pursuing bachelor degree,
140 students pursuing master degree, and 600 adult students.
More than 10,000 students graduated already, and they
are mainly working in Shanghai service industries (such
as banks, securities, insurance, foreign trades, business,
accounting firms, consulting and forwarding agents)
and foreign investment or joint venture enterprises
in manufacturing industries, except about 15% of them
going abroad. The students stand high in evaluation
from their employers, since they have good skills on
foreign language, computer application and special field
knowledge.
While the college puts focus on bachelor education
as teaching is the main task in a university, it shows
great concern on scientific research. Since 1999, the
teachers in the college have fulfilled a lot of research
items, and 4 of them won national funds either for natural
science or for social science. There were 1 item on
humanities of social science from national education
bureau, 67 items for Shanghai municipality (such as
research on philosophy, and those for the Science and
Technology Commission, for Development and Research
Center, for Education Commission and so on). Total outlay
on research amounts more than 4,000,000 RMB. Besides
more than 100 writings or textbooks published, nearly
500 academic theses have been published on national
key journals or authentic periodicals. Among all these
works, 7 items have separately won special prizes from
Shanghai municipality.
The academic subject "Industrial Economics"
of the college was listed in the key academic subjects
by Shanghai government in June of 1996. It has been
recognized after experts' inspection organized by the
education commission of municipality in July of 2000.
The academic subject "Contemporary Business &
Engineering Management" of the college was one
of projects of "211 China Higher Education Engineering
program".
The college has taken an active part in international
and regional exchange and co-operation, so it has established
various relations with universities in USA, Canada,
Australia, France, Finland, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan
and Hong Kong. The programs involve exchanging teachers
and students, co-operative researching, holding seminars
together, and so on. The college invites 5 foreign experts
or teachers all year long to teach junior students (third
year) "Oral Business English". The international
and regional cooperation has put a positive and favorable
effect on cultivating talented students, training qualified
teachers, pushing education reform, and improving scientific
researches.

Dr. Chen Xian, professor, is the executive dean of
College of International Business and Management Shanghai
University. He graduated from People's University of
China with his doctor degree of economics in 1995 and
master degree in 1988. In his long time teaching experience
he has been the deputy director of the Economics Department
in Jiangxi University, director of Commercial Economics
Department and director of International Business Department
of Shanghai University. He has taken the position of
the executive dean of the college since July of 2001.
His specialty is in the fields of Macroeconomics and
International Service Trade.
