Chinese Language Undergraduate Program for Overseas Students

                     Prospectus for Entry

1. Introduction

  Shanghai University is one of the major universities in Shanghai under the municipal government and one of the 100 key institutions of higher learning China will construct in the 21st century. It is one of the first universities granted the permission by the Ministry of Education to enroll overseas students. Its College of International Exchange began to offer refresher courses of Chinese language for international students in 1976. At present, the College is one of the 56 council member units of the Society of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and one of the fixed places appointed by the National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOTCFL) to dispatch Chinese language teachers abroad.

  The Chinese as a Foreign Language Teaching and Research Center of the College of International Exchange has a faculty with high professional quality and rich teaching experience. There are a total of 27 full-time and part-time teachers, among whom are three professors and 8 associate professors. Most of the teachers have obtained the qualification certificate of an instructor of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.

  In 1976 the College admitted some dozens of overseas students and in 2002 the total number of overseas students increased to more than 800. The College has established a course system combining long-term courses with short-term courses and  diploma with non-diploma education. In September 2003 the College began to enroll the overseas students majoring in Chinese Language for the first time. This undergraduate program aims at cultivating high-level, general-type and complex-type talents of Chinese language so as to meet the requirements of different countries in the world in this aspect. This major adopts the credit system and its courses are divided into three modules, namely, Economy and Trade Chinese, Chinese Language and Culture and Chinese-English Bilingualism. After the overseas students complete the required courses and get both the corresponding credits and the certificate of HSK8 , that is, grade A at the intermediate level of the Chinese Proficiency Test, they can be granted permission to graduate and get the graduation certificate of the undergraduate program. Those who have met the above requirements and passed the thesis defence can obtain the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

  The spring class every year: 20 students

  The autumn class every year: 20 students

3. Duration

  Four years

4. Admission Requirements

  For the first grade: Overseas students and overseas Chinese whose mother tongues are not Chinese, high school graduates, over18 years old and in good health.

  For the second grade: The applicants should have the experience of one-year Chinese study in any university in China or have the certificate of HSK3 or above.

V. Application time

  The spring class:  From October 10th every year to January 31st in the coming year

The autumn class:  From March 1st to August 15th every year.

VI. Registration Procedures

 1.The applicants should send US$50 application fee and the materials below to the International Students Admission Office of College of International Exchange, Shanghai University.

    1) Six recent photos (passport photo)

2) The application form

3) The transcript from a high school

4) The certificate of graduation from a high school

2. After checking and approving all these materials, the College will send the Letter of Admission and JW202 Form.

    US$2400 per year (not including textbooks and boarding and lodging fees)
