Shanghai University is one of the major universities in Shanghai under the direct jurisdiction of the Municipal Government and one of the 100 key institutions of higher education which China will construct in the 21st century. Its present president, Professor Qian Weichang, is a famous scientist, an academician of the China Academy of Sciences, and former Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. Founded in October 1922, Shanghai University has developed into a comprehensive University with a variety of disciplines including science, engineering, liberal arts, history, laws, fine arts, business, economics and management. The University consists of 22 colleges or schools and 1 independent department, offering 61 undergraduate majors, 86 Master’s degree programs, and 20 doctoral degree programs. The University has a high-quality faculty and a large group of experts and professors who are famous in  academic fields. The University has a full-time teaching faculty of over 2,500, among whom are 7 academicians of the China Academy of Sciences and the China Academy of Engineering, 442 professors and 723 associate professors. The University enrolls more than 38,000 full-time students, including over 700 doctoral students, over 4,000 postgraduates, over 26,000 undergraduates, over 6,000 associate students and over 1,400 overseas students. Its campuses cover an area of over 160 hectares. The libraries of Shanghai University are furnished with 3.6 million volumes and over 4,000 journals or periodicals. It is one of the universities with the largest scale in Shanghai.

The University began to admit overseas students in 1966, and since then more than 8,000 overseas students from 74 countries have studied here.

The College of International Exchange,which is in charge of the enrollment and administration of overseas students, offers Chinese language programs and provides logistic services for overseas students. The College has complete teaching and service facilities. There are three overseas students apartment buildings and there are classrooms, language labs, multi-media classrooms, multi-function recreation rooms and reading rooms specially for overseas students. The College provides a variety of optional courses and special lectures for overseas students, such as General Information about China,  Chinese Culture, Modern Economy of China, Chinese History, Chinese Folklore, Chinese Tourism, , Chinese Newspapers and Magazines Reading, Calligraphy, Painting, Cooking, Taijiquan, etc..The College will provide excellent studying and living conditions for overseas students from different countries in the world.
