The College of International Exchange of Shanghai University is a special college, which takes the responsibility for international cultural exchange and the enrollment and cultivation of international students. In terms of function, it is not only a department of the university, which manages the overseas students comprehensively, but also a teaching entity and a service entity.

The College has six administrative offices, namely, College Administrative Office, International Students’ Admission Office, International Students’ Management Office, International Students’ Service Office and China-Japan Joint-Education Office, and Chinese as a Foreign Language Teaching and Research Center. At present, the College has a total of 61 staffs. Since 1976 when the College began to enroll international students, more than 6,000 international students from 62 countries have studied in this university. The College is also in charge of the project of Chinese training for the international students who have won the scholarships from the Ministry of Education. In 1988 the college began to enroll postgraduate students, doctoral students, general advanced students and senior advanced students whose lessons are given in English. The total number of international students reached 842 in 2002, who studied on three campuses, namely, Baoshan, Yanchang and Jiading. Taking full advantage of the educational resources of the university, the college has adopted various teaching methods such as studying in special colleges and departments, or studying in language classes, or teaching students individually so as to satisfy the requirements of the students at different levels to receive various types of education, such as diploma education, non-diploma education, long-term and short-term Chinese training and so on. The college sets the time of study according to the requirements of the students. The time for non-diploma education and Chinese training varies from one week to over one year. The content of the non-diploma education is decided according to the speciality of the student. The Chinese training mainly focuses on Chinese language but some lectures and optional courses such as International Economy, International Trade, Chinese History, Chinese Literature, Chinese Culture, Chinese Folklore, Chinese Scenic Spots and Historic Interests, Chinese Calligraphy, Seal Cutting, Chinese Painting, Carving, Taiji Quan, Cuisine, etc. are also offered. The College has set up some language practice bases with special features for international students in cooperation with some institutions such as Taizhou Polytechnic College and Shanghai Mid-Asia Hotel so that they can not only appreciate the profundity of the Chinese Culture by themselves but also get additional opportunities of practicing Chinese, which is deeply welcomed by the students.

In order to meet the needs of international economic cooperation and cultural exchange, the college has utilized various tunnels to develop the international joint education. For example, the college has successfully established the cooperative relationship with an institution in Japan and has set up the Professional Personnel Development and Training Center, which trains and recommends talents to foreign enterprises in Shanghai. Shenyuan International Education Service Company under the charge of the college is one of the 14 intermediary agencies for studying abroad in Shanghai authorized by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration of Industry and Commerce, and has achieved obvious results in consultancy and intermediary service for studying abroad.

      Under the guidance of the principles and policies of the international students education of our government, the college will improve the management, ensure the quality and develop the cause of the students education vigorously and safely so as to make more contributions to the cultivation of talents for different countries in the world and to the development of the friendship, cooperation and exchange between the peoples of different countries.
