& COMMERCE
The Sydney Institute of Language & Commerce
(SILC) was founded in 1994 as a co-operative educational venture
jointly owned by Shanghai University (SU), in China and the
University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), in Australia.
The Institute is spread across the three campuses
of Shanghai University in Shanghai: The main campus of SILC is in
Jia Ding, as well as the other two campuses in Bao Shan and Zha
Bei. SILC offers both degree and non-degree programs and in 2001
the total enrolment of students is 2000, with 793 Degree
students.
SILC currently has 70 full-time and part-time
faculty members. Among them are 40 foreign teachers from
Australia, Britain, America, Canada and New Zealand. One foreign
Associate Dean has been appointed to coordinate the English
Language. Professor Fang Minglun, the Executive Vice - President
of Shanghai University holds a concurrent position as the Dean of
SILC.
The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors
which has representatives from both China and Australia, and
which determines the direction of the Institute and makes all
major policy decisions.
SILC's aim is to cultivate a new generation of
business and information professionals who look forward to the
challenges of 21st century; who understand their heritage, but
also appreciate the western perspective of business. These skills
and perspectives enable the graduates to contribute to the
development of China.
SILC is able to provide foreign, domestic and joint-venture
enterprises with graduates who are familiar with all areas of
business, and who are able to contribute to the growth and
success of business and information organizations - thus helping
Shanghai to reach its goal of becoming an international center of
economics, trade and finance.
SILC provides students with the best possible
learning environment. It offers a practical program of study
delivered in a rigorous and professional manner, to equip
students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a
career in the local and international business environment. At
graduation, students receive degrees or certificates from SU and
UTS. Scholarships and other incentives are provided to
outstanding students to encourage good study habits. SILC also
offers its top students scholarships to enable them to further
their studies in Australia.
SILC provides regular IELTS tests for students who
are going to study abroad. IELTS preparation classes are also
offered on a part-time basis throughout the year.
