SYDNEY INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE & COMMERCE

The Sydney Institute of Language & Commerce (SILC) was founded in 1994 as a co-operative educational venture jointly owned by Shanghai University (SU), in China and the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), in Australia.

The Institute is spread across the three campuses of Shanghai University in Shanghai: The main campus of SILC is in Jia Ding, as well as the other two campuses in Bao Shan and Zha Bei. SILC offers both degree and non-degree programs and in 2001 the total enrolment of students is 2000, with 793 Degree students.

One foreign Associate Dean has been appointed to coordinate the English Language. Professor Fang Minglun, the Executive Vice - President of Shanghai University holds a concurrent position as the Dean of SILC.

The Institute is governed by a Board of Directors which has representatives from both China and Australia, and which determines the direction of the Institute and makes all major policy decisions.

SILC's aim is to cultivate a new generation of business and information professionals who look forward to the challenges of 21st century; who understand their heritage, but also appreciate the western perspective of business. These skills and perspectives enable the graduates to contribute to the development of China.

SILC is able to provide foreign, domestic and joint-venture enterprises with graduates who are familiar with all areas of business, and who are able to contribute to the growth and success of business and information organizations - thus helping Shanghai to reach its goal of becoming an international center of economics, trade and finance.

SILC provides students with the best possible learning environment. It offers a practical program of study delivered in a rigorous and professional manner, to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to pursue a career in the local and international business environment. At graduation, students receive degrees or certificates from SU and UTS. Scholarships and other incentives are provided to outstanding students to encourage good study habits. SILC also offers its top students scholarships to enable them to further their studies in Australia.

SILC provides regular IELTS tests for students who are going to study abroad. IELTS preparation classes are also offered on a part-time basis throughout the year.
