School of Materials Science
and Engineering
New
materials, as one of three science and technology industries of
Shanghai in the twenty-first century, are closely related to
national economy and people’s life. The School of Materials
Science and Engineering of Shanghai University is a professional
one, which is mainly engaged in new materials research and
teaching programs for undergraduate, postgraduate (Master's
degree and Doctor's degree) and post-doctor for Shanghai. It has
been listed as a key constructive subject of national "211
Engineering".
The
school has three departments: Materials
and
Engineering,
Electronic Information Materials and Polymer Materials; one
institute of Materials; one Shanghai enhanced laboratory (of new
technology applications and explorations of Shanghai ferrous
metallurgy), which is one of national key subjects; and two open
laboratories of Shanghai Education Committee (mainly involving
mechanical properties of materials, microstructures and
properties);
2
post-doctor programs for Metallurgy and Materials; 2
Doctor’s
degree-granting programs for Ferrous Metallurgy and Materials; 7
Master’s degree-granting programs for Ferrous Metallurgy,
Materials, Materials Engineering, Non-Ferrous Metals, Physics and
Chemistry of Materials, Microelectron and Solid State
Electronics, Polymer Chemistry and Physics; 2 Engineering Master’s
degree-granting programs for Materials Engineering and Metallurgy
Engineering; and 6 undergraduate programs for Metallurgy
Engineering, Metallic Materials and Engineering, Inorganic
Materials and Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering,
Material Physics and Electronic Science and Technology.
In
a recent decade, the school has undertaken seven key subject
construction projects, being one of fifth in total (thirty-one
projects) in Shanghai University. Especially, Ferrous Metallurgy
is grant as a “the most important" constructive subject in
Shanghai. Also, the school has advanced instruments and
facilities valued fifty million RMB, and four institutes
co-operated with automobile group companies.
The
school has 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 21
doctorate supervisors, 29 professors and 75 associate professors.
78 projects got awards of Scientific and Technological
Achievements with various levels (nation, province and
municipality); more than 1800 papers were published, and friendly
academic communication was carried out widely with universities,
enterprises and institutes in such countries as America, United
Kingdom, Canada, German,
Sweden, Finland, Portugal, Japan, South-Korea and so on.
The
school emphasises deep theory foundation in academic, broad
knowledge, practised skill, strong ability of computer
applications and spoken and written English with a view to fully
developing students in aspects
of morality, wisdom and physical.
CAI
has been extensively adopted in major taught courses. At present,
there are 45 and 93 postgraduates studying respectively for
Doctor’s and Master’s degree and 1230 undergraduates studying
for the first degree. The undergraduate employment covers
wide-range from institutes of Chinese Science Academy, national
offices and enterprises to joint ventures and foreign investment
companies. They are well welcome in society for their good
reputations, thousands of them become leaders and directors in
many fields and more than 300 are studying and working abroad.
The excellent undergraduates can pursue further studies
(Master’s degree) without standard examinations.

Introduction
of Dean
Xia
Yi-Ben, a Professor and Doctorate Supervisor, is devoting himself
to Electronic Materials & Devices, mainly involving
Functional Thin Film Materials, Diamond Films & Related
Devices.
He
was graduated from Fudan University majoring semiconductor
physics in 1965, and got the master degree majoring infrared
semiconductor from Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1981. He was a
visiting scholar to pursue advanced studies in Physics
Department, Universitaet Wurzburg/ Germany
over
two years ( 1985-1987), Guest Professor in Fraunhofer Thin
Films and Surface Engineering Institute (Fhg-IST) /Germany
(1996-1987) and a Guest Professor in Materials Science Institute,
Tohoku University/Japan (1998-1999).
He
was awarded the First Rank for Electronic Product Branch in China
/1977 (Automatic Gain Control Transistor) and got the Patent:
Diamond and Diamondlike Films as Antireflective Coating on
Infrared and Visible Optical Devices from Chinese Patent
Office/1992 (Patent No. 92840108). His publications are over 90
papers.
Now
he is the Memberships of Chinese Electronics Society, Chinese
Optical Materials Society and Shanghai Semiconductor Materials
Society. Now the projects undertook are Infrared properties and
interfaces research of DLC ( Shanghai Natural Science
Foundation), Selected growth (development) at cell places by DPLF
(a key project of Shanghai Education Science Committee) and High-resolution
X-ray imaging — study of the micro strip gas chamber (National
Natural Science Foundation of China).
