Shanghai University, one of the key institutions
of higher learning in Shanghai directly under the Municipal
Government and on the list of national "Project 211" in China.
The president of the university is Professor WeiChang Chien,
famous scientist of China, the Vice-chairman of the People's
Political Consultative Conference of China and an Academician
of Chinese academy of Science.
Shanghai University has the glorious tradition and
reputation. At the beginning of 1920's Shanghai University
educated a lot scholars an patriotic personage who enjoy the
great prestige both at home and abroad. The new Shanghai University
still carry forward the tradition, excellent spirit and cultivated
many outstanding talents for socialist modernization drive
Shanghai University is a comprehensive university
with rich diversity of disciplines, it consists of 22
colleges and schools , offering 56 undergraduate programs,
64 master programs, 7 professional programs for degree
of engineering, 16 doctoral programs and 6 post-doctoral
programs covering Dynamic, Metallurgy, Electronic & Communication,
Mathematics , Materials Science and Information Engineering.
In addition, we also have 13 keydisciplines and 3 key
laboratories on the municipal level have been set up in
three batches
It has a faculty of 3,000 , among whim more than 300 are full
professors and more than 800 are associate professors. Of
these professors, 6 are academicians of Chinese Academy of
Science and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 126 doctor supervisors
and 15 national-leveled young specialists of science and technology
of their achievements.
Shanghai University is the biggest institution
of higher learning run by Shanghai Municipality. It has a
clear thought guiding her running and takes cultivating socialist

and well-disciplined as her fundamental mission. Since reform
and opening, with its motto of being independent and making
unremitting efforts to be strong and under the guidance of

on education. And a series of measures have been implemented.
As a result, a school running system and teaching mode with
the outstanding features have taken into shape. At the university,
there have been carried out some unique systems such as the
credit system, the system of electing courses, short-term
system, tutor system. Under the direction of their tutors
and at their own wills do the students elect the courses,
arrange the study progress, choose the lecturers and decide
the majors. So they students can fully combine the needs of
the society with their own abilities, interests and special
skills. In addition, based on its characteristics of multi-disciplines
and taking its advantage of comprehensive development, the
university carries out the main and supplementary courses
system, double subjects system and double majors system. At
the same time, an excellent undergraduates will be probably
be promoted as a graduate and an excellent master student
can advance his schedule of studying for a PhD. By these methods
the university provides the students with a good environment
of fully developing their ideas, intelligence and health.
Now there are more than 30,000 full-time students at the university,
among whom nearly 24,000 are undergraduates and 3,300 are
PhD and master students. And at the university there are over
20,000 adults students as well.
The strength of its scientific research stands in
advance of the institutions of higher learning in China. There
have been set up more than 72 research institutes and research
centers, among which the New & High Tech Development Garden
is approved by the State Science Commission. Sticking to the
strategy of getting active involvement in the economic construction,
following the advanced level in the world and developing the
scientific research the university has obtained not only a
host of significant scientific and technological results in
the field of applied research but also a group of domestically
and internationally influential fruits in the field of fundamental
research. Within the recent years, the university ranks advanced
in terms of scientific research funds, achievements awarded
and the number of the academic thesis. The university pays
a lot of attention to the industrialization of its scientific
and technological fruits. And to further the improvement of
its courses construction and teaching quality the university
adds the new scientific results to its teaching.
The capabilities of our scientific research belong
to the domestic universities with advanced level. We have
established 30 new and hi-tech developing parks, research
institutes and research centers. Adhering to the principle
of boosting economy, following the world's advanced level
and developing scientific research, we have achieved great
success in the field of applied research and basic research
both home and abroad. In recent years, our research funds,
number of award-winning achievements and number of scientific
papers all ranks high among the domestic universities. We
put great emphasis on the transformation of scientific and
technological achievements and substantiation of the contents
of teaching to promote teaching quality.
Shanghai University is closely linked with all walks
of life in our society. Ever since the reform and opening
to the outside world, we have strengthened the ties with society
in the fields of training and research. We have established
the College of Life and Science with the local research Institute
of China Scientific Institute; we have enrolled graduate students
majoring in literature, economy, law and so on with Shanghai
Social and Scientific Institute. We have also set up the College
of Film and Television and Art Technology supported by the
circle of Shanghai film and television and broadcasting. Furthermore,
we have invited a number of famous scholars and masters as
advisers, part-time professors and lecture professors.
Shanghai University has communicated and cooperated
widely with international community. Our relationship and
academic exchange with foreign universities, research institutes
and enterprises have also increased a lot. Up till now, we
have established cooperative relationship with tens of universities
abroad, invited many world-famous scholars as honorary professors,
part-time professors and guides of doctors. Meanwhile, we
are gradually sending teachers abroad for further training,
investigating and academic exchanging. We began to enroll
English-teaching foreign students, graduates and doctors in
the year of 1998. Nowadays there are altogether more than
600 foreign students in Shanghai University. In recent years,
Shanghai University has achieved greatly in school-running
with foreign universities, such as the Sydney College of Industry
and Commerce of Shanghai University jointly run by the Sydney
College of Science and Technology in Australia.
Located in the eastern cosmopolitan city - the
biggest economic center in China, Shanghai University not
