Briefing on College of
Foreign Languages
College of Foreign Languages, Shanghai University
aims at training qualified personnel of foreign languages
characteristic of inter-disciplinary and applied abilities who
are fit for the social and economic development of Shanghai
Municipality. The College, composed of the English Department,
the Applied English Department and the Japanese Department, has
about 800 undergraduates majoring in English and Japanese and
offers courses in English, Japanese and other foreign languages
for nearly 20 thousand non-foreign language majors ( including
undergraduates, master and doctoral candidates) on campus. In
addition, it is authorized to confer master degrees in
linguistics and applied linguistics as well as in the English
language and literature. In the courses of the discipline
construction, it has developed a system of inter-disciplinary
modules in the fields of commerce, secretarial
work,economicmanagement,law,foreign language and literature
education.
The College has about 200 teaching staff, among whom 30% are
professors and associate professors. It has two affiliated
research centers:
the Popular Foreign Literature Research Centre and Translation
Research Centre, and is accredited to edit Shanghai Journal of
Translators for Science and Technology, one of the core
periodicals in foreign language research in China.
In both Band Four and Band Eight of Test for English
Majors organized by the State Education Commission, the English
majors have reached the standards set for the nation-wide Grade A
colleges and departments of foreign languages in the past ten
successive years. In each of the performance tests jointly
sponsored by China International Exchange Foundation and Japan
International Education Society, over 98% of the Japanese majors
have done very well all these years.
Importance is attached also to the exchanges with other
universities at home and abroad. The College is an executive
member of China Foreign Languages College and University
Coordination Council. It is tied up with the universities in the
United States, Japan and Finland. There are long-term programmes
in academic studies, language learning and teaching and exchanges
of teachers and students with City University of New York,
Japan's RYUKOKU University and KYOTO University.
Mao Zhong-ming, born in 1952, Associate Professor, is
now Dean of Foreign Languages College, member of the editorial
board of Shanghai Journal of Translators for Science and
Technology, and of the Journal of Teach Yourself English..
Graduated from Warwick University in U.K. in 1986 and
awarded an ME, Mr. Mao was once Chair of Industrial Foreign Trade
Department of Engineering College, Shanghai University; Vice Dean
of School of Economics and Management, Shanghai University;
Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai University.
