College of Law

The College of Law, operated by the Shanghai Judicial Bureau and Shanghai University, is one of the largest law schools within a comprehensive university. Authorized by the Shanghai Municipal Government, SULS and the Shanghai Administrative Institute of Politics & Law (SACIPL), the college is operated on the basis of “one administration with multiple programs.”
Established in 1985, our school has, after several challenging growth years, developed into a multi-level, multi-program and multi-disciplinary law school with several unique features. We offer a top-notch legal education to undergraduates and graduates, as well as to vocational students and adult learners. Vocational programs cover pre-job training and on-the-job training.
Doctoral candidates may now choose from two tracks: sociology-social psychology and criminal sociology. At the master’s level, two programs in criminal law and constitutional and administrative law are available. One double-bachelor’s degree program is offered, and one undergraduate program featuring four concentrations is also available. Students may choose to focus on law, economic law, international law or trade and criminal justice. In addition, one program for 3rd- and 4th- year adult college students and one program for adult undergraduates are available.
We have eight teaching sections, including a Law Department, an Economics Department, a Criminal Justice Department, an International Law and Trade Department, a Fundamentals Department, a Graduate Department, a Continuing Education Department, and a Training Department. In addition, we have co-founded with Shanghai Lawyer’s Association a Lawyer’s Institute, which has undertaken the task of registering and providing professional training for all lawyers in Shanghai.
The school currently educates 2,300 regular university students, of whom 2,100 are undergraduates and 200 are double-bachelor’s students and post-graduates. In addition, 5,000 students take advantage of our adult education programs.
We attach great importance to scholastic research and the combination of research and social advancement, economic development and good judicial practice. We have nine research departments, including a Modern Law Research Institute; a Law of Science & Technology Research Center; a History of Chinese Law Research Center; a Chinese and Foreign Comparative Jurisprudence Research Institute; a Crimes Research Center; a Legal Culture Research Center; a Social Administration Research Center; a Modern Civilized Prison Research Center; and an International Business and Law Research Center.
Our school is also allied with the Crimes Prevention Committee of the National Criminology Research Association and Shanghai Social Psychology, both presided over by our professors. In recent years, we have accepted more than 50 state-level, provincial and ministerial research tasks, of which 30 have been awarded prizes at different levels, such as the 2nd Prize of National Advancement of Science & Technology, the Advancement Prize of Science & Technology awarded by the State Commission of Science & Technology, the 1st Prize of National Excellent Books, and an Excellence Prize for Achievements in Legal Research awarded by Ministry of Justice.
The faculty is of exceedingly high caliber, with most members possessing master’s degrees or doctorates. Several are renowned law professors and experts recognized both in Shanghai and throughout China. Of 130 professional teachers, 40 percent hold senior academic titles and 55 percent hold middle titles. More than 30 experts and scholars serve as visiting professors from the fields of law, economics and social development.
We highly value foreign exchange and inter-collegiate cooperation. We have established a regular exchange relationship with universities and colleges in the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Macao. Each year we send visiting scholars abroad and invite foreign jurisprudence scholars to lecture.
Close to Songjiang University Town, our school – a tree-lined campus with lovely flower beds – is located at the foot of She Shan Mountain, a celebrated tourist resort in Shanghai. Transportation to the 400-acre campus is very convenient, and the school is equipped with modern facilities and an outstanding library.
