Department of Traditional Chinese Paintings


Department of Traditional Chinese Paintings is composed of the faculty of the big names of fine arts in Shanghai. Now there are 2 professors, 7 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors.

Shanghai Traditional Chinese Paintings Society with the background of HaiPai style has profound cultural tradition and free arts spirits. The department pays attention to the practicing of the Chinese painting tradition and techniques of expression. Furthermore, the department advocates reforms and learning from others, all the artistic works of the faculty have their own characters which express the world and frame of minds of the urbanites.

In recent years, the students of the department have become a compelling team of Traditional Chinese Paintings in Shanghai, many of their works have been selected to display in exhibitions and won awards.

The objectives of the department are to form its own system based on the Chinese culture, life up-to-date and the aesthetic spirit, to spread and expand the traditional Chinese culture that it might take its place in the world of art by teaching, exhibiting art works and training students abroad and so on.

Length of Study:
Undergraduate Courses, 4 years; Master Candidate Courses, 2 and half years

Academic Objectives:
Students should generally understand the elementary knowledge of the Traditional Chinese Paintings, systematically mastering the theory of Chinese Paintings and professional skills to achieve the ability of producing works with certain depth and accomplish their thesis with certain individual academic thought.

Courses Requirements:
Producing of Traditional Chinese Paintings, Modern Chinese watercolor and ink, Brushwork Figure Painting, Flower and Water Painting, Mountain and Water of Song and Yuan dynasty, Mountain and Water of Ming and Qing Dynasty.
