Brief Introduction

Oriented towards literature, history and sociology and divided into Dep. of Chinese Language and Literature, History Dep., Sociology Dep., Dep. of Archives Management Dep. and Dep. of Chinese Culture Study, the SU College of Liberal Arts offers five undergraduate programs in Chinese Language and Literature, Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, History, Sociology and Archives Mangement, four master’s programs in Chinese Language and Literature, history, sociology and library, information and archives management, five Ph.D programs in sociology, anthropology, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, ancient Chinese literature and modern Chinese history in addition to positions for postdoctoral research in sociology. Specializations available for graduate students enrolled in 2006 master’s programs range from modern and contemporary Chinese literature, ancient Chinese literature, theory of literature and art, Chinese characters, history on special topics, ancient Chinese history, modern and contemporary Chinese history, sociology, anthropology, folklore study and archives.

The sociology program has been listed among key programs for priority development by both the “211” project and Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, with Urban sociology selected as a key subject for second-phase development by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. “Chinese Language and Literature” has entered the list of top priorities of undergraduate program development in Shanghai in 2005.   
Yexin, a well-know writer, is the dean of the College and Prof. Deng Weizhi, a renowned sociologist, chairs the sociology department. Of the 112 faculty members, 85 hold positions at the level of professor or associate professor. The College has developed long-term cooperative and exchange relations with universities and academic institutions of over 10 countries and regions.
The faculty has won as many as 50 awards for state or local research projects in the field of liberal arts. The College is undertaking a total of over 50 research projects, either of international or intercollegiate cooperation type, or sponsored by the state or the municipal government for social science research and planning.
The College has a student body of over 1000 undergraduates and over 600 graduates.
